The POLYPHONICA AEGEAN, intercultural children’s choir of a social and cultural character was set up in Mytilene in September 2017. Addressed to Greek children as well as children of migrants and refugees, it is meant to teach them how to sing safely and properly (voice training), move and play rhythms with their body, communicate and collaborate in a team setting. The choir began its rehearsals in September 2017 with three teachers (musicians / educators). The children, aged 5–15, were split into two groups of about 20. With the experience gained from the pilot project of 2016, there has been a gradual but impressive progress in the way children communicate and trust one another but also in the smooth integration of refugee children with the Greek local children. Their musical skills have also improved considerably. The action culminated at the end of the 2017-18 academic year with a performance at the Municipal Theater of Mytilene which included fairy tales, songs and dancing, with stage sets and costumes made by teachers, parents and children exclusively from recycled materials, old clothes and discarded items.
